Support Services

Christchurch is able to provide an extensive and comprehensive network of support services for athletes in the city - whether they are competing, training or rehabilitating.

Sports Nutrition

Sprint runnerChristchurch's clean, green image extends to its food supply. Compared with most countries, food is reasonably priced, especially meat and dairy products, which have a reputation for being of excellent quality. There is an abundance of locally-produced fresh produce, all of which can be purchased in supermarkets.

The best value in fruits and vegetables can be found amongst the locally grown varieties, typical of those available seasonally in temperate climates. Tropical and imported fruits and vegetables are often found in the larger supermarkets and various specialty shops sell a wide range of imported fresh and processed foods.

Limited supplies of locally grown organic produce can be purchased from some supermarkets and there are several butchers in the city stocking organically grown meats. There is also a huge variety of imported foods, especially from the Asian countries, which can be found in the supermarkets or large Asian warehouses.

Hotels and restaurants are only too happy to cater for the specific requirements of athletes; they appreciate prior notification, when possible, of groups with special dietary needs. There is also the opportunity for visiting teams to bring their own chefs and cooks to cater for athletes' nutritional requirements and tastes.

The fresh water supply in the city is of outstanding quality - no mention of nutrition would be complete without reference to the purity and taste of the natural, untreated water available on tap within the boundaries of Christchurch. It is eminently potable and it is not necessary for visitors to drink bottled water.

Local and visiting athletes are fortunate in having the expert services of several registered sports nutritionists. These nutritionists will be able to help plan meals, liaise with chefs on the behalf of groups or individuals for special catering needs, show athletes where to shop, and, if required, take them around the supermarkets. Nutritionists will help athletes find outlets for any supplements needed and provide nutritional advice and programming.
