Christchurch - so close to so much

Christchurch is the main centre of the province of Canterbury. The region extends from Kaikoura in the North to Oamaru in the South, and from the Southern Alps to the Pacific Coast. Unique among provinces in New Zealand, Canterbury provides an incredibly diverse range of world class visitor attractions and exhilarating experiences.

There is plenty on offer in this region, and all within an hour's drive of Christchurch.

To the east lies Banks Peninsula featuring sheltered bays, sandy beaches, bush clad valleys and rocky coastlines. Boating, tramping, a visit to the wineries and the French settlers' harbour-side village of Akaroa are key Peninsula attractions.

Forested foothills and lakes sit to the West, beyond fertile plains and braided rivers. Beyond them lie the tallest mountains in Australasia, the Southern Alps rise parallel to the coastline. Mountain passes with delightful alpine villages break the almost impenetrable divide and deliver the traveller to the West Coast. Here you can try your hand at gold mining, walk the scenic tracks or visit the heritage sites.

A journey North reveals green rolling hills, forests and long deserted beaches with the whale-watching centre of Kaikoura only two hours drive away. Inland is Hanmer Springs, an alpine resort featuring geothermal out-door hot pools and 17000 hectares of indigenous and native trees.
