Funding
Support package objectives
Events and activities seeking assistance must meet the following key objectives of Christchurch City Council Recreation & Sport:
Generate visitors to the city
The event or activity is attracting one or more of our key market segments i.e. corporates, retirees etc.
Direct dollar returns i.e. employment, business and tourism
Future potential for the event or activity - 'one off' or on going
Media exposure for Christchurch as both a tourism and sporting destination
Potential for event self sufficiency
Support from relevant organisation(s) - national and/or international governing body
Compatibility with existing events
Balance of events throughout the calendar year
Opportunities for involvement - spectators, volunteers, officials
'Fit' with sports facilities and environment
These objectives form the basis of the Christchurch City Council Recreation & Sport's 'Sports Events & Activities Evaluation Guidelines', which we use when evaluating whether a major or minor sporting event or activity should be sponsored or supported in-kind and if so to what financial level.
Types of funding
Depending on the specific event details Christchurch City Council may provide financial assistance towards the costs of hosting a major sporting event or activity. This funding may take the form of:
1. A Sponsorship:
Sponsorship maybe given to a major international sporting event or activity that is a one-off or ongoing, is part of an international sports calendar and produces a significant economic benefit to the city. All applications will need to take into consideration Council’s Annual Plan process.
2. 'Small Sports Events' Fund (National/South Island Sporting Events & Activities):
Purpose
We recognise that major national and South Island events also produce economic benefit to the city. Therefore the Small Sports Events fund has been established to assist national/South Island sporting events and activities that meet certain criteria. (Note that funding is not available to international events through the Small Sports Events Fund)
Please note that the average level of support provided ranges between $500 - $1500.
Criteria
Events will need to meet minimum requirements in order to qualify for funding. When determining eligibility for funding, consideration will be given to factors such as participant numbers (from outside Christchurch) and the duration of the event.
- The sporting event/activity must be longer than one day and involve one night's accommodation in Christchurch city.
- More than 100 participants/officials (from outside of Christchurch) must be registered in the event/activity.
- The application must come from an incorporated society (non-commercial) e.g. sports association or club.
- The event/activity must be a national or South Island event (excludes international events). Priority will be given to national events in the first instance.
- The event/activity must be held in Christchurch(Christchurch City Council boundaries). Council may consider an event/activity where participants are staying in Christchurch but the competition is elsewhere e.g. Lincoln.
- Only top level national/South Island sporting events/activities will be considered e.g. Senior/Masters/Premier/elite.
- The event is not eligible if it has received funding from another Council source.
- Successful recipients will be required to sign Christchurch City Council's terms and conditions contained in the sponsorship contract indicating the agreed rights and responsibilities of both parties.
