Funding

Support package objectives

Events and activities seeking assistance must meet the following key objectives of Christchurch City Council Recreation & Sport:
Generate visitors to the city
The event or activity is attracting one or more of our key market segments i.e. corporates, retirees etc.
Direct dollar returns i.e. employment, business and tourism
Future potential for the event or activity - 'one off' or on going
Media exposure for Christchurch as both a tourism and sporting destination
Potential for event self sufficiency
Support from relevant organisation(s) - national and/or international governing body
Compatibility with existing events
Balance of events throughout the calendar year
Opportunities for involvement - spectators, volunteers, officials
'Fit' with sports facilities and environment

These objectives form the bases of Christchurch City Council Recreation & Sport's 'Sports Events & Activities Evaluation Guidelines', which we use when evaluating whether a major sporting event or activity should be given support, be that a grant, event seeding or in-kind, and if so to what financial level.

Types of funding

Depending on the specific event details Christchurch City Council may provide financial assistance towards the costs of hosting a major sporting event or activity. This funding may take the form of:

1. A Grant:
A grant maybe given to a major international sporting event or activity that is a one-off or ongoing, is part of an international sports calendar and produces a significant economic benefit to the city. All applications will need to take into consideration Council’s Annual Plan process.

2. 'Growing Sport' Fund (National/South Island Sporting Events & Activities):
We recognise that major national and South Island events also produce economic benefit to the city. Therefore the 'Growing Sport' fund has been established to assist national/South Island sporting events and activities that meet certain criteria. (Note that funding is not available to international events through the Growing Sport Fund)

Events will need to meet minimum requirements in order to qualify for funding (see below). When determining eligibility for funding, consideration will be given to factors such as participant numbers (from outside Christchurch) and the duration of the event.

All applications for the Growing Sport Fund must be received by May 31st in the year (calendar year July 1st to June 30th) the event is scheduled to take place in Christchurch.
